An exhibition exploring the history of Gucci is coming to London.

After a successful debut in Shanghai in April, the Gucci Cosmos exhibition is moving to the UK. Running from 11 October until 31 December, the immersive installation will showcase and celebrate the house signatures (from the Bamboo bag to the Jackie and the Horsebit), as well as other forward-thinking designs from its 102-year-long history.

The British artist Es Devlin – who designed the original Shanghai exhibit – has created a show space that pays homage to London, through a series of imaginative sets, sculptures and multimedia artworks. It will be staged at 180 Studios on The Strand.

Following its stint in London, the exhibition will move to Paris and then Kyoto, with each show featuring dedicated narratives that resonate with the distinct culture of its host city and country. The UK capital plays a particularly special role in Gucci's rich history, as it was here that the house's founder Guccio Gucci was first inspired to start his artisanal luggage atelier, while working as a porter at The Savoy hotel in the late 1890s.

In tribute to this, the London version of the exhibition opens with a meticulous recreation of The Savoy lobby as it would have looked in that era, complete with iconic black-and-white marble floor. Visitors then step into a large-scale reproduction of The Savoy's famous red lift – the first electric elevator in London, affectionately dubbed 'The Ascending Room' – before exiting the other side to see the rest of the exhibition. The ground floor will also feature a Gucci café decorated with vintage wallpaper, serving red-coloured drinks and snacks.
